Athletics and Wellness Center
In September 2014, Convent of the Sacred Heart unveiled its new Athletics and Wellness Center at 406 East 91st Street. This 50,000 square foot, state-of-the art facility marks a new chapter in the illustrious history of New York City's oldest independent school for girls.
At 25 yards, with six lanes, Sacred Heart’s new pool is regulation size, and makes 91st Street one of only three independent schools in Manhattan (and the only school in our league) with a pool. The pool deck features two locker rooms, home and away. The first floor also includes offices for the Aquatics Director. Every student will be required to learn to swim before she leaves the Lower School. Middle and Upper School girls will also have opportunities to improve their swimming and take water safety classes. The floor will also be the home to Sacred Heart’s Community Service office, allowing this robust initiative to continue to thrive and grow.
The Pool Mezzanine can accommodate seating for 132 people, and there is more room to stand in the back. The large windows were designed to bring maximum natural light into the space without getting into the swimmers’ eyes, and they are strategically spaced so no one can look into the pool from the outside. The pool mezzanine is housed on the second floor, where the Administrative offices are located as well as staff locker rooms.
A regulation-sized court for basketball, volleyball, and badminton is located on the third floor. The court has bleachers that reach capacity of 288 people when fully extended and a curtain at half court that allows it to be divided into two cross court basketball courts or two volleyball courts. The court can also be divided into three badminton courts. Baskets are equipped to be lowered as appropriate. The floor also has a 238 square foot athletic training room, which houses an evaluation table for assessing and treating injuries, first aid supplies, a small whirlpool, and other treatment and rehabilitation equipment. The floor also features a 232-square-foot team meeting room where coaches and players can strategize during games, debrief following games and watch and break down game film. Lastly, there are two locker rooms on this floor.
The 1,200-square-foot dance studio is located on the 4th floor and features dual ballet bars, floor to ceiling mirrors, a wood sprung floor, and a sound system.
Multipurpose Fitness Room
There are two fitness rooms on the fourth floor which can be used for a variety of activities. The rooms are easily dividable with a collapsible dividing wall, and can also be used as one full space with a total of 2,315 square feet. These spaces can be used for yoga, retreats, extracurricular activities, rentals and more.
The fourth floor is also home to a 1,900-square-foot strength and conditioning cardio studio. This room includes cardio equipment, strength training machines and free weight equipment. At the east end of the cardio room there is a spinning annex which can house 12 spin bikes and a 13th bike for the instructor.
