Facilities

"In July 2008, The Convent of the Sacred Heart purchased a facility located at 406 East 91st Street which will become a new sports center, beginning a new chapter in the illustrious history of New York City’s oldest independent school for girls."

The historic buildings which house Sacred Heart, the Otto Kahn Mansion and the James Burden Mansion, are both on the National and State Registers of Historic Places.

Since the buildings were purchased by the Convent of the Sacred Heart in 1934 (Kahn) and 1946 (Burden), they have been converted from private residences to school use, while still maintaining the magnificent interior architectural details in both buildings.

The Spirit of Sacred Heart

In July 2008, The Convent of the Sacred Heart purchased a facility located at 406 East 91st Street which will become a new sports center, beginning a new chapter in the illustrious history of New York City’s oldest independent school for girls. The next two to three years will bring a great deal of physical change resulting in a campus with two locations and one mission.

In this ever-changing world, Sacred Heart continues to evolve. The expansion of sports and physical education offerings to another facility allows the creation of more classrooms in the Kahn mansion and enriched academic offerings. This transformational project will ensure we continue educate the whole child with excellent programmatic offerings, while maintaining the historic details of the Kahn and Burden Mansions that make our school, truly, a second home for our community.

Planning has begun for a capital campaign to raise the funds needed to enhance academic programs, construct a sports center and convert one of the current gymnasiums into classrooms and programmatic spaces in the Kahn mansion. This campaign will ensure that the distinct spirit of The Convent of the Sacred Heart continues to be defined by a purposeful commitment to the five goals which create a school where mind, body and soul can be nurtured. The enrichment of already strong academic programs and creation of a first-class athletic center poises the school for continued success.
