Authors' Night Enthralls

"Women on the Frontier," 91st Street's 20th annual Authors' Night, could not have been more aptly named. The evening, which was attended by over 160 91st Street parents, alumnae, and friends, featured extraordinary women with enthralling stories to tell.

Journalist and 91st Street parent Katherine Zoepf, whose writing has appeared in publications such as the New York Observer, the New York Times Magazine and the International Herald Tribune, fascinated the audience with details from her book Excellent Daughters: The Secret Lives of Young Women Who are Transforming the Arab World. Published in 2016, the book has since been translated into five languages.

Betty Ogiel Rubanga, who attended the Kangole Girls School, the Sacred Heart school in Uganda, captivated the audience with the real-life story behind her book, Against All Odds: Memoirs of Resilience, Determination, and Luck Amidst Hardship for an African Girl Child in her passionate Pursuit for Education. Ms. Ogiel also shared her riveting story with students in the Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools earlier in the week.

The panel discussion was moderated by 91st Street alumna Magee Hickey. An Emmy Award-winning reporter, Ms. Hickey has worked in TV news for more than three decades in New York City. She invigorates every discussion with her curiosity and passion for journalism and life.

Authors' Night was sponsored by the Alumnae Association in conjunction with the Bicentennial Committee.
