Building a Global Community

When Spanish exchange student Elena assisted with a Lower School art class, she also helped to build a better understanding of Sacred Heart's international network.

Elena Simó García will join Mary Haling in teaching ceramics after school on Tuesday afternoons as part of a wider initiative to increase interaction between Lower Schoolers and high school students visiting from Sacred Heart schools abroad.

Elena is from our sister school Colegio Sagrado Corazón Chamartín in Madrid.

"Helping with younger students is a wonderful way for the exchange students to be involved and give back to our community," said 91st Street exchange coordinator Barbara Pachetti. "It also helps them to continue practicing their language skills."

Exchange students assist with Lower School art classes on a regular basis, returning to the same class each week. The resulting bond helps the younger students begin to understand what it means to be part of the global Sacred Heart community.
