What is your first memory of Sacred Heart?

I remember when I was in Kindergarten and it was my birthday and my friend Madeline made me a birthday crown. It made me so happy because it had my favorite colors. When I put it on, it made me feel special because I had made my first friend.

I know you moved from Tokyo the summer before you started Kindergarten. Can you tell me how you felt coming to Sacred Heart?

I was nervous about moving because I didn’t know much English and I didn’t have any friends here. But the teachers were welcoming and nice. My new friends made me feel like I didn’t have to worry about my English and they played with me a lot.

Do you like being in a school with all girls?

Yes, because they ask me to sit next to them and are so kind.

What is unique about Sacred Heart?

That there are Sacred Hearts all around the world. When I go to Japan during the summer, I love to visit the Sacred Heart in Tokyo. I went last summer and wore my uniform and I made a presentation about the Sacred Heart here. They asked me questions about New York and I was happy to answer them. I also got to introduce myself to the whole school while standing on stage.

What was your favorite project this year?

I loved doing the Bug Book. Each girl was assigned a different insect -- I got the honey bee. In art we drew pictures and designed pop-up books. In science, we studied about the insect and saw lots of live insects – which was very exciting. In library, we did our research about what they eat, what they look like and their habitat.

What does being a 1st grader mean to you?

It means that we have to set a good example for the Kindergarteners and the Pre-Kers - like we don’t talk in the hallways. And it means that we have a lot of homework.

Which is your favorite of the five Sacred Heart Goals?

Goal 2 because I think learning is very important and it can be fun, too.

What do you do after school?

I like to go to the park with my friends. I also like tennis with Sacred Heart after school. I have tennis today!

Are you excited about the new Athletics and Wellness Center?

I am excited that the 2nd graders get to go in the pool a lot. There is a dance room where we do exercises and jump over high bars and do pushups. And in the gym, we play basketball and tag.

Who inspires you?

My teachers inspire me. They give me hard homework like reading big chapter books and writing a lot of sentences. They make me want to try harder.

If there were only one word you could use to describe what Sacred Heart means to you, what would it be?

Friendship.
