Two 91st Street students explored their passion for computer science this summer with Girls Who Code (GWC).

Charlotte ‘20 and Maeve ‘20 won full scholarships to GWC’s prestigious technology immersion program, spending seven weeks at Adobe and United Technologies Corporation, respectively. The girls participated in a daily specialized coding class, met with and observed their company mentors, learned about technology careers, and went on field trips to other leading technology companies in New York City.

They learned of the program at 91st Street their junior year, when they took Data Analysis Using Python with computer science teacher Lauren Mitchell, who encouraged them to apply. This year, both will use what they learned to expand their final projects from Ms. Mitchell’s class into full independent Capstone projects.  Charlotte will analyze and explore the physical effects of social media on multiple subjects, and Maeve will focus on the use of virtual reality technology in exposure therapy.

Both said the experience was transformative, and helped them truly understand all the different ways coding can affect and enhance different careers.
