Over spring break, ten Upper School students traveled to New Orleans for a week of building with Habitat for Humanity. This trip offers students from 91st Street an incredible opportunity not only to serve, but also to experience the distinctive culture of New Orleans.
In addition to building a house in the Lower Seventh Ward, students enjoyed a personal conversation at the home of Robert Green, a Katrina survivor in the Lower Ninth Ward, a tour of St. Louis Cathedral, breakfasted on beignets at Café Du Monde, and feasted on authentic Creole cuisine at Dooky Chase's Restaurant, hosted by Christine Guillory '00. The girls enjoyed a visit to our sister school, the Academy of the Sacred Heart, and a guided tour of Tulane and Loyola Universities with Alexandra Pucciarelli '14. Every evening, at the Trinity Retreat Center - Molly's House, the students led evening reflections to share their experiences.
The group included juniors Michelle Sunga, Olivia Sumberac, Emma Castello, Claire Barbrack, Charlotte Magee, Ulana Hapij, Ibby Edmondson, Isabel Severino, Schuyler Stump, and Katie McGarty. The trip was led by Michael Chung, Director of Community Outreach and Upper School Math Teachers Catherine Maitner and Lois Wang.
